The Bakery City!!

Well…. Though I’ve traveled a lot… I’ve never got to explore a city as much I’ve explore cities and towns down south due my business travel.

I had been to Coimbatore (cbe herein after) after a long gap. Long gap in terms of travel, I mean. I was getting in terms to traveling after quite some time…

I was about to spend more than a day here, as against my usual one day trips. That started of a new fascination for this city. It had the true colors of an emerging metropolitan city. Mixed hues of development and serenity. All that you need in city, some big brands, good eateries, local and international, places to hangout, accessibility to weekend breaks… this was it. I think after PUNE, I liked cbe a lot. No wonder my batch mates who hail from this city do not like Chennai. And I think now, I know why.

The best part of Coimbatore is that it is surrounded by ghats. That actually makes the city really pleasant in the evenings. I’ve never felt too hot or too humid in this place. Feels as if you are surrounded by nature and are in the laps of mother earth. I'm not exaggerating. Its really pleasent when u get off the fast track life of a metro and derail urself near the nature.

But there is one thing about kovai that no one has ever mentioned. That it is a bakery city. This city has a strange fascination for baked items I think. Every street will at least have a bakery. This has also emerged into moving up the value chain, where there are specific names and they have branches spread across the city. These bakers have also opened restaurants and not just confined to a bakery joint. This is really interesting. And I haven’t yet noticed this in any other city. May be my friends will refer to PUNE or Bangalore. That’s what I’m coming to; cbe is the next PUNE or Bangalore.

This city also is a breeding cell for budding entrepreneurs. If you know a business family then you just need to fill the blanks. They are in every thing, textiles, health, education, IT. These business families have grown with each generation. They have picked up the threads of each generation and made it a thick rope. The “in” thing of each of their times has been tested in terms of a business model and been successful in most of the cases. What I observed that it was indeed an engineer’s city. I think all the engineers would dream to work in Coimbatore. All the spheres are very much active here. During a conversation to one of my colleagues, he felt that this city will be a national/global hub for components, component of auto or textile machinery. Engineering has been the forte of this city. It’s come a long way from textile, which spilled to the nearby districts like erode, Tirupur, and may be salem too.

Pals, this city rocks. If I was to retire in Tamilnadu I would choose cbe over Chennai on many fronts.
